Based on a Complex Question
– The key themes outlined from the beginning of the course focused on Three Foundational Geographic Modes of Inquiry. Using all foundational questions and the course content to draw your thoughts from answer the following question:
Regional success is dependent on a number of factors. Discuss a specific region keeping in mind the three foundational questions and outline the challenges they are facing with climate change. How can they ensure continued success in adapting to their specific climate related challenges?
– The key themes found throughout the course explored the concepts of regional cohesion, nationalism and economic outcomes.
Using regional examples to ground your discussion, explain the various ways that the region you have chosen to discuss has or has not been able to achieve economic success focusing on specific barriers. What problems can you identify within the region and do you have any solutions to address the problems you see?

The subject I have chosen is the 15 January 2022 eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano.
This topic is unique, and I would like to delve deeper into it. The major eruption from Tonga’s Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) volcano generated a transoceanic tsunami. A combined ocean and air shock wave led to this eruption. Its force was determined to be 4 to 18 megatons of trinitrotoluene (Mt)4, based on the energy released by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake1. According to NPR5, this energy reached 10 Mt. The analysis of ionospheric readings indicated that the most enormous explosion, one of five during the eruption, happened at about 04:16:20 UTC6, with an estimated range of 9-37 Mt. The tsunami, triggered by this underwater volcano, surged 83 centimeters in the Nuku’alofa district of Tongatapu, Tonga. According to the Tongan government, the highest water level in Tongatapu’s northwest area was roughly 15 m3. The episode had a baseline VEI-5 rating on the spectrum of volcanic explosiveness. These details add together to make this a fascinating topic.
The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano can be found in the western part of the South Pacific Ocean, to the west of the main populated islands that make up the Kingdom of Tonga. It comprises the little islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai and the shallow reefs surrounding the caldera rim of a much bigger underwater formation. The Tofua Arc, a portion of the broader Tonga-Kermadec volcanoes, is composed of twelve distinct submerged volcanoes. Over the course of geological timescales, the Pacific Plate was pushed under the Indo-Australian Plate, forming the Tonga-Kermadec arc. The largest island in the country, Tongatapu, is positioned around 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Tonga-Hunga Haapai. The Tonga-Kermadec Islands subduction zone that runs from New Zealand to Fiji and is home to multiple active volcanoes includes this region.

Select a region in the united states and a specific time frame within either past, present or future and argue why it is the most important region.

Due Friday, November 18th by 9pm:
-Assignment due: Send Rachel an email with your idea for your final project-You need to send me an email by Friday, November 18th by 9pm with a couple sentences of your idea on what you want to write on for me to send feedback:
Final Project: Due by 9pm on Monday, December 19th
.
Select a region in the United States and a specific time frame within either past, present or future and argue why it is the most important region. Importance could be political, economic,
environmental, etc. There is no correct answer – you just need to pick an argument and explain it.
The paper needs to be 3-5 pages. The paper needs a bibliography – the bibliography does not count towards the 3-5 pages.
If you work with the writing center (see below), you will earn extra credit. I highly recommend using the writing center for this assignment – make sure to schedule an appointment in advance.
Use what you learned in the lecture, readings, films as well as your own research. You need to have at least 3 outside sources for your paper – outside sources mean sources I did not reference
in lectures nor assign as assignments (hint: a great place to look for outside sources would be the bibliographies of the readings I assigned).
If you argue that a specific region will be the most important in the future, explain what industry, environmental factor(s), cultural phenomenon will make it the most important and why.
This assignment is a 20% of your total grade.
