Toddler stages are identified as those children 12 months to 2 years. At age two the provider can expect the toddler to weigh around 28 pounds, be 54 inches tall and anterior fontanelle be completely closed (Maaks, et al., 2020). Around age 2 hand dominance develops but not until around 4 years old is it truly established. Two-year-old have the ability to express their feeling with words. Toddlers use 2- or 3-word sentences (Maaks, et al., 2020). Communication with the toddler helps them develop language skills and develop speech. One can expect half of a two-year old’s words can be identified by a stranger.
Although each child develops at an individual rate, there are milestones that are red flags to development. Red flag symptoms allow the provider to further investigate the toddler to ensure early intervention can be initiated. Toddlers normally can walk by 18 months, speak at least 15 words (League). If by two years old the toddler does not use 2 word sentences, cannot walk in heel-toe pattern, follow simple instructions, or know how to use spoon, fork, brush, or phone these are red flags to developments (League).
Communication is an important part of the growth and development of the normal toddler. Symptoms of autism can appear from 12-18 months. Problems with eye contact, not responding to their own name, likes to play alone, problems with non verbal communication are early signs of autism. Most children are not diagnosed until age 3 or older for autism even though the show symptoms sooner. Early detection of autism can improve outcomes for toddlers(Johnson).
